Associate/Assistant Professor in Communication (Journalism)

The Department of Communication of the Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the position of Associate/Assistant Professor in communication. We are looking for applicants to teach courses in journalism. A track record of high quality research and publication is a must. Qualifications and willingness to teach at least some of the following courses are expected: English News Writing; English News Editing; Advanced News Writing and Reporting in English; and Workshop: English Publication. Additional courses may be assigned to match the teaching needs of the department, faculty, and university. Ability to develop and teach new courses in data journalism, data visualization, multimedia reporting, big data analysis and to conduct research in big data analysis will be highly desirable.
The Department of Communication currently offers broad-based curricula leading to Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degrees covering various areas of communication studies (communication theory, intercultural communication, organizational communication); vocationally-oriented public communication (public relations, advertising, and event planning); media studies and journalism (journalism writing and publication, mass media, new media, digital culture); cultural studies (cultural and critical theory, cinema, and popular culture); public speaking; and creative media (video production, photography, and animation). Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant field. Highly qualified ABDs will be considered, but must have the doctorate in hand before reporting to duty. Candidates must have a demonstrable record of conducting research and publishing in internationally respected channels, ideally SSCI journals. Professional experience in news media and teaching experience at the university level is highly desirable. While candidates must be fluent in English, ability to speak Chinese would be a plus (but not required).
The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in early August 2023.
A taxable annual remuneration starting MOP828,100 (approximately USD102,230) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
