The Department of Portuguese of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for the position of Senior Instructor of Portuguese.

The Department of Portuguese is an established and lively scholarly community that includes speakers of European Portuguese, Brazilian and other varieties of Portuguese. At the undergraduate level, the Department offers a bachelor’s degree programme focusing on Portuguese as a Foreign Language with selected courses in interpretation and translation, foreign language pedagogy, literary studies and history. The Department also provides Portuguese language courses for the Faculty of Law and elective courses in Portuguese as a foreign language for students from all faculties of the University. At the postgraduate level, the Department offers two MA programmes, namely MA in Portuguese Language and Intercultural Studies (with specializations in Literary and Cultural Studies and Applied Linguistics) and MA in Translation Studies (Portuguese-Chinese), and two PhD programmes, namely PhD in Applied Linguistics (Portuguese) and PhD in Literary and Intercultural Studies (Portuguese).

Qualifications

Applicant must possess an MA degree in Linguistics, Teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign Language, Literary, Cultural Studies or in a related area although a PhD degree in one or more of these areas is highly preferable. Applicants should have extensive experience teaching Portuguese language to Chinese students at university level and have native or near-native fluency in the Portuguese language. A good command of English is highly desirable.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2024.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP611,940 (approximately USD75,550) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
