The Department of Portuguese of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for the position of Associate/Assistant Professor in Portuguese (Linguistic/Cultural Studies).

The Department of Portuguese is an established and lively scholarly community that includes speakers of European, Brazilian and other varieties of Portuguese. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in Portuguese Studies concentrating on Portuguese as a Foreign Language with selected courses in Linguistics, Interpretation and Translation, Foreign Language Pedagogy, Literary Studies, History and Culture. At the undergraduate level, the Department also teaches Portuguese language within the Faculty of Law and offers elective courses in Portuguese as a foreign language to students from all faculties of the University. At the postgraduate level, the Department offers two MA programmes (the MA in Portuguese Language and Intercultural Studies, and the MA in Translation Studies (Portuguese-Chinese), as well as the PhD programmes in (i) Applied Linguistics (Portuguese) and (ii) Literary and Intercultural Studies (Portuguese).

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD in any discipline related to Portuguese Studies (preferably, Portuguese Linguistics or Cultural Studies in Portuguese). A very good record of academic publications and scientific research in Portuguese Studies is required. Previous experience in teaching/research in Higher Education Institutions is particularly valued. Applicants should demonstrate clear, consistent ideas about the development of their career in Portuguese Studies within the academic framework of the University of Macau. They should be native speakers of Portuguese or have a native-like command of the language. A good command of English is also required.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in July 2024.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
