The Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) invites applications for the position of Senior Instructor of English Linguistics with generalist training and experience teaching undergraduate courses in two or more of the following fields: a) introductory linguistics, b) English grammar and lexis, c) English phonetics and phonology, d) English semantics, and/or e) sociolinguistics. Candidates who are prepared to teach two or more classes in these fields in addition to broader courses in English Studies are particularly welcome to apply.

The Department of English is an established and distinguished multinational, scholarly community. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in English Studies (focusing simultaneously on literary studies and linguistics), as well as elective courses in translation studies. At the graduate level the Department hosts two MA programmes in (i) English Studies and (ii) Translation and offers courses in the University-level MSc in Data Science. The Department offers PhD degrees in either (a) Literary Studies or (b) Linguistics. FAH is home to both the Centre for Linguistics (https://linguistics.fah.um.edu.mo/) and the Centre for Studies of Translation, Interpreting and Cognition (https://cstic.um.edu.mo/). The Department also contributes courses to the General Education programme.

Qualifications

Applicant must possess a Master’s degree in Linguistics or related areas, although a PhD degree in a relevant area is highly preferable. Applicant should have teaching experience at the tertiary level. Applicants should be able to demonstrate competence in teaching, a willingness to provide service to the University and the English Department, and an interest in the English language in Asian contexts. Candidates with quality research publications and extensive teaching experience in two or more of the preferred fields at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels are particularly welcome.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in February 2024.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP611,940 (approximately USD75,550) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
